Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga (NPM) is New Zealand's Māori Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) funded by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC ) and hostedThe University of Auckland.

NPM has 21 partner research entities, conducting research of relevance to Māori communities and is an important vehicle by which Aotearoa New Zealand continues to be a key player in global Indigenous research and affairs.

The centre's research is driven by its vision of creating the foundations for flourishing Māori futures and it is focused on bringing positive change and transformation to the nation, and the wider world.

Last year a new species of fresh water golden clam was discovered in the Waikato awa. This invasive species invoked ngā kaitiaki o Waipā, whānau, hapū and iwi to mobilise, to understand and learn about the golden clam.

Kanapu is designed by Māori, for Māori to ignite Māori talent and leadership across te ao Māori in research, science and innovation spaces; on marae, within hapū and iwi mahi, and throughout our hapori in the cities. Māori are fundamental to a vibrant research, science, innovation (RSI) system.

Kanapu means lightning. It sets the scene to strike at the obstacles that block Māori pathways and transform how Māori collaboratively engage through connecting Māori to Māori, retaining kaimahi and accelerating success. Haruru ana te ao – reverberation – is the consequence and transformation of the system-wide energy states across the RSI sector as Māori potential is enabled.

The Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Māori (NPM) Futures Programme supports promising Māori senior undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral students as a means to growing an expert and capable Māori researcher workforce for Aotearoa New Zealand.
