We have a comprehensive programme of grants and awards and support by way of our Te Kupenga o MAI network generating a spectrum of research that contributes to the achievement of our CoRE outcomes and impacts.

New Horizons Summer Internships

Part of the NPM Māori Futures programme, the summer internships provide an opportunity for Māori tertiary students to work alongside an NPM researcher to gain research experience and to expand their professional development network.

The Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Māori (NPM) Futures Programme supports promising Māori senior undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral students as a means to growing an expert and capable Māori researcher workforce for Aotearoa New Zealand.

This is a Request for Proposals for multi-institutional Māori led research that contributes to specific outcomes and the overall NPM mission as expressed through the NPM Matakitenga Research Framework. Application close Monday 29th April 2024 5:00pm.

The Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Graduate Award is for a promising New Zealand Māori graduate student to undertake post-graduate study or research at a US institution in the field of Indigenous development.

The award is available for study or research that fits within and contributes to the NPM Research Programme and NPM’s priorities and themes.

Fulbright New Zealand Graduate Awards can be used towards a Masters or PhD programme, or grantees can participate as a Visiting Student Researcher (VSR). A VSR allows grantees to spend between 6-12 months studying or researching a topic or proposed project in the US, usually as part of a degree programme within New Zealand. This can be an attractive option for those pursuing a graduate degree at a New Zealand institution, when research in the US would supplement or aid their programme. A VSR does not require full graduate school admission into a US institution, and instead requires a letter of invitation from a host institution.

We are making a short call for excellent research activities that have scholarly, creative and/or community engagement dimensions that serve to document, interrogate and communicate the spectrum of displacement impacts that have affected Māori communities due to Cyclone Gabrielle. Displacement may be interpreted broadly and relate to any cyclone related interruption of everyday life, both short or long term.

The goal of our renowned NPM Māori Summer Internship Programme is to inspire students to enter higher degree research programmes and continue into research careers. This is an annual 10-week full-time programme, where we select and match at least 10 Māori tertiary students with leading Māori researchers in locations across the country. Participation in virtual workshops allow interns to connect and share experiences, learn from each other and from the senior Māori researchers who present on topics such as Indigenous research methods and ethics, Indigenous theories of knowledge, and career opportunities. Each intern produces an oral and written report, and the best receives a sought-after award.
